How  Modulated Phototherapy Works

Modulated phototherapy technology has been designed to bathe the body or part of the body in a field of radiant energy that consists of the specific biological wavelengths and frequencies that promote repair and rejuvenation at molecular and cellular levels. Through proprietary computer technology, these wavelengths and frequencies are delivered with the latest advances in LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) and are completely safe.

A proprietary matrix of rejuvenating energies then stimulates positive biological functions, which the user experiences as both restful and energizing.

Scientifically, the system stimulates the following three levels of effects that are set in motion as the light energy is transmitted through the skin.   

1. Photomechanical Effect
Photons of light penetrate the skin colliding with the molecules of the body tissues below the skin’s surface. There are approximately ten thousand collisions or bounces before the photon has given up its energy. This effect has an amazing relaxing effect on the muscles, joints and tissues. This also enables the release of toxins and promotes a sensation of profound stress reduction at a very deep level.

2. Photothermal Effect -
This effect generates heat by vibrating the molecules of the tissue and this relaxes of the tissues allowing the capillaries to dilate. Therefore blood flow with nutrients and oxygen is increased to the tissues of the body and a revitalizing systemic effect is achieved.

3. Photoelectric Effect -
The photons of light then deliver an electric charge raising the capacitance potential of the cells (recharging the cells like a battery) stimulating repair and regeneration.

 Tech Notes on LEDs  
  • LEDs (light emitting diodes) are a new generation of micro chips that generate electromagnetic energy in the form of radiant light in a specific range.
  • LEDs do not in themselves generate Heat, giving a much longer service life and require far less electricity to operate.
  • Lasers get hot, are expensive and only give out one wavelength of light energy.
  • LEDs are preferable to Lasers because they can be adapted to generate multiple wavelengths at a much lower cost and are more efficient for treating tissues.

Near infra red (NIR) 
This wavelength is the most well studied in phototherapy history. NIF is the deepest penetrating and is very good for muscle relaxation and deep healing.

Deep red (670nm)
This wavelength very energizing, regenerative and restorative to the human body. These wave lengths, especially the deep red have been shown to support the immune system,  promoting the  body to repair at faster rate in what is called today an anti-aging effect. , like that of a younger person. True anti-aging is not about how long we live it is about how long we can maintain our quality of  life.

Ultra Blue (470 nm)
This wavelength is well studied in research focusing on mood altering, jet lag, SAD, and stress reduction. These are also very calming wavelengths stimulating the body to create serotonin and melatonin,helping the body to reset its biological clock. These wavelengths have an anti-bacterial effect on skin and can be used for skin conditions like acne.

Scientifically this works because different biological molecules in tissue absorb different wavelengths of light becoming “photo activated”. Some 40 years ago it was discovered that Light absorbing molecules use different wavelengths of light as a signaling mechanism for cellular processes. With the DreamSpa’s proprietary delivery system these wavelengths of light energy effecting cellular processes can stimulated, enhanced and controlled. Such as:

Safety of Phototherapy
Phototherapy has been studied extensively in Europe and the US for over thirty years and has been the subject of over 3,000 scientific papers, published worldwide. There are no reported negative side effects to the therapy, which is painless, non-toxic and compliments many traditional therapies. In 1991, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development along with the National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke declared photon therapy to be safe.

Phototherapy is non-invasive and considered safe enough to be used in the Milwaukee Children's Hospital in Wisconsin to energize cells and prevent growth of chemo-induced mouth sores that keep patient's from eating. Dr. Harry T. Whelan has successfully treated wounds, third degree burns and
brain cancer. Dr. Whelan is the phototherapy consultant to NASA.

 NASA has installed LED phototherapy systems in the international space station because in the zero gravity of space astronaut’s muscles atrophy and wounds heal much slower than on earth. Although a relatively new cutting edge science, phototherapy has made the cover of national and international publications:
